GloVE: A Distributed Environment for Low Cost Scalable VoD
نویسندگان
چکیده
In this paper, we present the Global Video Environment (GloVE), which is a novel scalable VoD system based on the stream reusage technique called Cooperative Video Cache (CVC), where the clients cooperate to create a distributed video repository used as the prior source of content. In GloVE, differently from conventional systems, the server’s bandwidth does not limit the number of simultaneous active clients because subsequent requests to the same video are satisfied by the CVC, following a peer-to-peer approach, making possible the usage of low cost PCs as the system’s video server. Our system extends the original CVC proposal by adding support for video servers without multicast capability, storing any video format. We analyze preliminary performance results of GloVE using a Fast Ethernet based PC server and small buffers at the clients demonstrating that only one channel of the server need to be used to deliver a highly popular video to N clients, instead of the N channels required in the convetional servers.

GloVE: A Distributed Environment for Low Cost Scalable VoD Systems
In this paper, we introduce a scalable Video-on-Demand (VoD) system called GloVE (Global Video Environment) in which active clients cooperate to create a shareable video cache that is used as the primary source of video content for subsequent client requests. In this way, GloVE server’s bandwidth does not limit the number of simultaneous clients that can watch a video since once its content is ...

متن کاملAssessing the Efficiency of Stream Reuse Techniques in Peer-to-Peer Video-on-Demand Systems
Many works have reported simulated performance benefits of stream reuse techniques such as chaining, batching, and patching to the scalability of VoD systems. However, the relative contribution of such techniques have been rarely evaluated in practical implementations of scalable VoD servers. In this work, we investigate the efficiency of representative stream reuse techniques on the GloVE syst...

متن کاملMulti-objective and Scalable Heuristic Algorithm for Workflow Task Scheduling in Utility Grids
To use services transparently in a distributed environment, the Utility Grids develop a cyber-infrastructure. The parameters of the Quality of Service such as the allocation-cost and makespan have to be dealt with in order to schedule workflow application tasks in the Utility Grids. Optimization of both target parameters above is a challenge in a distributed environment and may conflict one an...
